Sold at the Auction Rooms

So much for my regular posting...sorry! Anyway, today I ventured over the North side of Melbs and visited Auction Rooms. 

Located on Errol Street, this auction house-turned-cafe stands out against anything else in the street. I can't say I've spent a lot of time (or any time at all for that matter) around North Melbourne, but recommendations from a couple of friends drew me to this side of town (and the trip was well worth it!).

The menu was a bit more limited than what I had expected, offering a small brunch and even smaller lunch menu.

I almost never order soup at a restaurant. Pretty much because you know you're always going to find something more enticing (and you never know how sneakily soup in a can can be disguised...) BUT! This time, I decided to go for the corn chowder with sweet potato, confit chicken and coriander ($15). Or so I thought. Five minutes before the dish arrived, one of the waiters apologetically announced that the soup had actually been changed to the chicken, potato and leek (GOD DAMMIT). I didn't object and basically licked the bowl clean, however I do believe my mum's potato and leek soup can't be beaten..

My boyfriend was leaning towards the bacon + eggs, but due to my skilful persuasion techniques, he decided to opt for the banana bread with peanut butter custard and maple bacon ($12) (which I was all smiles about because I got to taste some tooooo).

Auction rooms also have a great little selection of sweets at the counter. We couldn't resist buying choccy croissant for the journey home :)

Overall a lovely little afternoon. I will be hitting up Hardware Societe for brunch tomorrow so stay tuned!
